Shed Hunting
It's the middle of February; you have cabin fever, but can't think of anything fun to do outside. Here's a suggestion. Try shed hunting! No, a “shed” is not a new kind of animal. Nor does it refer to finding a new place to store your tools or lawnmower. Most hunters know that “shed hunting” means searching for discarded antlers, left behind by whitetail deer. |

A trip to the taxidermist (and other 'stuff') INMAN —Another Kansas firearms deer season has come and gone and archery season is in it’s waning days, taking with them the last opportunity to harvest a Kansas antlered deer this year. My wife and I are mostly meat hunters, however three years ago we were privileged to take nice Kansas bucks during the same season. It was Joyce’s first buck, a dandy 9-point whitetail with a nice wide rack, and mine was a big 11-point mule deer from western Kansas, my first really big buck. |

Bad law may be getting worse in North Dakota
There’s an odd law in North Dakota that could soon become an even worse law.
The law pertains to possession of firearms by those convicted of certain crimes. The problem is those crimes don’t necessarily have anything to do with guns. For example, if a person is arrested and convicted for driving under the influence (DUI) the judge can, as part of the sentence, prohibit the violator from possessing a firearm for one year. |

Bowhunter: Nature's friend of foeNORTH SALEM - The backbone of a Westchester County plan to reduce the number of deer in the region is the bow-and-arrow hunter, such as outdoorsmen Don Hopko and Alain Rossignol. Animal advocates say recreational hunting, especially bowhunting, is an inhumane and inefficient way to cull the heavy deer population. |

Top stories of 2008
Looking around our newsroom, it seems like we're supposed to summarize the top events of the past year in our assigned field. All right, we'll try. But it's going to be difficult. In the outdoors, we seldom have a "major news event." The outdoors is individuals and buddies and families fishing, hunting, camping, looking for birds, camping. We don't gather in arenas and stadiums except occasionally for some major bass fishing happening. |

Revenue hit from hunting decline
Freeland Leffew has been hunting for most of his 65 years, and he's passed on the family tradition.
"I grew up hunting and fishing in Rhea County,TN and I've had my son hunting and fishing ever since he was in diapers," the Soddy-Daisy resident said. "After you get experience, hunting is not about killing. It is about being outdoors with your family or friends, enjoying the people and your surroundings." |

New Year good time for outdoorsmen to self-evaluate

Proof that hunters are crazy
Sunday, I had one tag left for regular gun season. Sunday was also the last day it could be used. There was not much going on, so I thought I should go get one more doe. I am doing my best to control the population, plus, I still have a little room in the freezer. |

Mystery of the Northgate Buck
The blurry photo and the brief accompanying text that seemed to be on scores of hunting-related Web sites and in hundreds of thousands of e-mails shuttled across Texas and the rest of the nation over the past month or so might as well have been just another Internet hoax. There seemed no way a buck deer with antlers as large as those had been hit by a vehicle almost within Houston’s city limits. |

He's taken a ton o' turkeys
STOCKTON, Mo. - Ken White was ready to pull the trigger. The turkey he had been calling was close — within 20 yards, he estimated. Because the bird was concealed by heavy brush, he couldn’t see it. But he could hear it. That’s why he had his shotgun up, ready to fire the moment the turkey walked into a clearing. One more soft call. One more answer. And the turkey inched closer. |

Beat the Heat for Early Bucks
Understanding how hot weather affects both deer and hunters can help you find more deer in the early part of bow season.
By Bruce Ingram
The first week of bow season had been typical - in fact, too typical. The temperature had been as high as the mid-80s during the day and had only cooled off at night a few degrees. But the day was Friday, and after refraining from venturing into the woods all week because of the weather, I had decided to go afield after work. |
